learning from the past to invent the future—V ideas that changed the face of fashion

I: the stiletto heel—“the design of the stiletto heel was created by the late kristin s. wagner during the early MCMs, but, it would not become popular until the late MCMLs.“ this iconic style made several cameo appearances in the comedy/drama series sex and the city and it sparked the rebirth and popularization of the uber sexy stiletto heel with the manolo blahnik brand as its preferred luxury brand.

II: designer knock offs—is a multi-million dollar industry, it isn’t illegal to purchase knock offs only to sell them, however, organizations like cfda are working to crack down on offenders with campaigns like; “can’t fake fashion” — raising awareness to counterfeit merchandise while promoting original designs.

III: death to supermodels—anna wintour understood in the late MCMLXXs the direct influence celebrities possess when it comes to selling magazine units. nowadays, a magazine’s worth is depicted by the celebrities they can afford to grace the cover.

IV: new look by christian dior revolutionized women’s fashion silhouettes after reassessing the lack of feminine silhouettes post wwII. the new look accentuated a woman’s tiny waistline, soft sloping shoulders, and enhanced full hips providing the perfect hour glass shape.

V: pret-a-porter (ready to wear)—carefully crafted designs for mass production  (sounds like an oxymoron) to promote a less bespoke garment which in turns helps designers to sell more consumer merchandise.

dandies + dandizettes: the complementary of cool

“the dandies and dandizettes of MDCCCXIX-XX must have been a strange race.”

-charles dickens “all year round” (jan. XXVIII, MDCCCLXIX ) p. CLXXXIX

behind the inspiration:

“the complementary of cool” photo shoot’s concept, was influenced by the subcultures of dandyism, such as the dandizettes: ” ‘dandizette’ was a term applied to the feminine devotees to dress, and their absurdities were fully equal to those of the dandies”; as well as, the complementary colors of the color wheel, the visual artist barkley l. hendricks’ monochromatic paintings, the art of “black cool” , and these creative duos—who compliment one another—with their contemporary take on dandyism; thus, exposing the innovation of a re-mix culture (dickens, CLXXXIX.)

So happy at this very moment!!!!

thepresidentwearsprada:

neon V magazine online and social media launch

I first met Kimee Brown at a DC fashion/art show in a warehouse last summer. I loved what she was wearing: a Karl Lagerfeld for Macy’s t-shirt before it was released to the public. Since then, Kimee has never looked the same twice; her diverse, eclectic, and thoughtful style is a testament to her effervescent personality.

When she approached me a few weeks ago to create a short film to commemorate the online and social media launch of neon V, I was immediately excited. Neon V is a magazine founded by five women, three of which I was already well acquainted with: Kimee, Stephanie Mills and Michelle German, plus Tanekeya Word and Carmela Wingfield. I love taking photographs of Stephanie because she is incredibly photogenic, creative and positive. Michelle, has always surprised and delighted with her fashion, and most notably with her makeup.

This film was shot by me in one night last week and is based on a concept developed by the ladies of neon V. I had so much fun scouting locations and during filming. These ladies broke into spontaneous coordinated song and/or dance numerous times and generally pervaded the entire undertaking with positivity and love. It shows in the end result: this is a film that I am very proud of. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it.

You can find neon V magazine’s website HERE.
